What is Sidr powder

Sidr leaves come from the lote tree (Ziziphus spina-christi), a plant with a long history of use across Arabia, Africa and Islamic tradition.

Body Scription Sidr powder is made from 100% wild-harvested leaves, finely milled with nothing added. No fragrance, fillers or unnecessary ingredients.

Naturally rich in saponins, Sidr creates a light cleansing foam when mixed with water, making it a simple, versatile wash for the scalp, face and body.

One plant. One ingredient.

Worth knowing

Sidr leaves contain their own natural cleansing compounds.

They are called saponins. When the powder is mixed thoroughly with water, they create a light foam that helps lift oil and buildup from the scalp and skin. That is what makes sidr useful as a wash as well as a mask.

What it helps with

Scalp health

Sidr gently cleanses the scalp and roots, helping remove excess buildup while keeping the scalp feeling fresh, balanced and comfortable, a better foundation for healthy hair growth.

Flakes & irritation

Its natural saponins help lift away flakes, excess oil and residue that can leave the scalp itchy or uncomfortable.

Greasy, dull or heavy hair

Sidr helps remove oil and product buildup that can weigh hair down, leaving it feeling lighter, cleaner and naturally shinier.

Hair growth support

A clean, well-cared-for scalp creates a better environment for healthy hair growth and helps keep buildup from collecting around the roots.

A face that feels tight after washing

Your face should feel clean without making you dread the dry, tight feeling afterwards. Mix sidr with water or rose water for a freshly prepared face wash and massage it gently over damp skin.

You can also use a thicker mixture as a short mask. It is a simple way to cleanse your skin with the leaf itself, with no need to scrub hard or add several steps.

Oily skin and body breakouts

Sidr does more than wash away sweat and oil. Its leaves contain natural cleansing compounds and sidr leaf extracts have shown antibacterial and antifungal activity in laboratory research.

Mix Sidr powder with water to form a smooth paste. Apply it to the chest, back or shoulders as a cleansing treatment, or thin the mixture with a little more water and work it between your hands to create a light natural foam for use as a body wash.

How to use

Always prepare it fresh before use.

  1. 01

    Scalp treatment

Mix 2–3 tablespoons with enough water or rose water to form a loose paste.

Part the hair, apply directly to the scalp and massage gently. Leave for 20–30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Optional: Add a little onion oil or garlic oil for extra shine and to support healthy hair growth, or a few drops of tea tree oil if your scalp is flaky.

  2. 02

    Face wash or mask

Mix 1 tablespoon with water or rose water.

For a face wash, massage over damp skin and rinse.

For a mask, make it slightly thicker, leave on for up to 10 minutes, then rinse gently. Avoid the eye area.

  3. 03

    Body wash

Mix 2–3 tablespoons with water or rose water until lightly foamy. Massage over damp skin, then rinse thoroughly.

The tradition

Sidr in Islamic medicine

The lote tree has a story older than any modern beauty routine. Known as sidr in Arabic, it has been valued across the Middle East and Africa for generations. For Muslims, its name is especially familiar from the Qur'an: Sidrat al-Muntahā, the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary.

Whole sidr leaves also have a place in ruqyah, the practice of seeking healing and protection by reciting Qur'an and supplications. The leaves are first crushed and steeped in water. That water is then recited over and used for washing, seeking protection from harm such as the evil eye and sihr.

Sidr leaves were used for washing in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, for both the hair and the body. It is reported that when Umm Salamah RA asked what she should use on her head, he told her:

The research

What has been studied

Sidr leaves naturally contain saponins, the compounds responsible for their gentle foaming and cleansing action.

Researchers have also identified flavonoids and investigated sidr leaf extracts for antifungal and antioxidant activity, helping explain why the plant has such a long history of use for cleansing the scalp and skin.
